Horseshoe Bend Mill Pond
Horseshoe Bend Mill Pond is an 11-acre, highly popular recreational fishing area near the city of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. Like other ponds in Boise County, it may serve as a water source for helicopter fire fighting operations. Thus, any infestation of invasive weeds could be easily spread to other waterbodies in the region.
In 2003, Eurasian Watermilfoil was confirmed in Horseshoe Bend Mill Pond. Treatments in 2004 and 2005 were done with the mill pond drawn down to minimum level and the inlet and outlet gates shut and locked during treatment in order to reduce the amount of herbicide needed. After the success of the 2005 treatment, surveys detected a much reduced level of Eurasian milfoil.
In 2007 surveys showed Eurasian watermilfoil in some areas of the pond. However, no treatment was performed becasue the pond was drained. Future surveys will determine the outcome of this draining.
