Hauser Lake, Kootenai County

Hauser Lake's new boatwash Hauser Lake, 15 miles northwest of Coeur d’Alene city, is prized for its beauty and recreational value to boaters, fishers, water skiers and swimmers. The lake is approximately 625 acres with an average depth of 21 feet. Shallow depth, warm temperatures, and high phosphorous levels can result in dense plant growth which is deleterious to fish and other lake wildlife.

Thus far, surveys have not detected the invasive aquatic weed Eurasian Watermilfoil in Hauser Lake. However, many nearby lakes are infested, and if milfoil were introduced to Hauser Lake, conditions would be perfect for the weed to rapidly establish itself. Because watercraft are an important vector for invasive species to move between lakes, proper rinsing can prevent infestation of the lake.

The Hauser Lake Watershed Coalition (HLWC), a volunteer group of local residents working to improve the water quality and ecology of Hauser Lake, was approved for ISDA Eurasian Watermilfoil Task Force funding to build a boat rinse station near Hauser Lake’s only public boat launch. The rinse station opened in May, 2007. Educational signs include directions for thorough rinsing of watercraft and noxious weed identification. The HLWC will also carry out spring and late summer aquatic surveys to monitor for invasive plants.
